Schwalbe and wheel maker Syntace have unveiled details of a new dual chamber tyre system which promises greater traction and control - but without the snake bite flats.
The system, which is still a tubeless model, allows the chamber closest the rim to be inflated to higher pressures to keep the tyre tight to the rim and to provide a buffer for puncture-causing hits. Meanwhile the outer chamber can be puffed to low pressures around one bar (14psi) which cuts rolling resistance over uneven ground and gives greater traction.
Markus Hachmeyer, Senior Product Manager at tyre maker Schwalbe said: "One can hardly risk riding on standard MTB tires with less than 1.5 bar (20psi), because the risk of snake bites is simply too great."
The system hasn't been perfected yet and Schwalbe and Syntace - who were working independently on the idea - will present more details at Eurobike. However they are confident the system will be compatible with conventional tyres and rims and weigh less than 200g.
